Midwives often find themselves in uncharted territory when asked to help women who plan to give birth at home. Trained in hospital, some midwives lack confidence in their skills and are anxious about safety. Sometimes they have little back-up from other health professionals and lines of communication are poor. They mainly to do the best they can for the mother and baby, but feel that they are in a situation which could easily be out of control.

This series explores aspects of the art and science of midwifery in home births. It will help the midwife work positively with any woman who seeks a home birth.

A thorough physical examination of every neonate is necessary and accepted as good practice. It is usually carried out in the hospital, but can also be done at home if that is where your baby was born. An experienced midwife or a doctor performs the examination.

These days there is a wide choice of child seats, from a variety of manufacturers. Fitting a child seat may seem simple, but checks carried out nationally indicate that only 25% of seats are fitted correctly.

Even at low speeds, a child in an incorrectly fitted or insecure seat could increase their risk of injury.

Remember, the law states that YOU are responsible for the safety of your child.

Allow plenty of time when fitting your infant carrier in your car, and always follow the manufacturers instructions carefully.

Although a cardiopulmonary arrest (when there is no breathing and the heart has stopped beating) is rare in infants and children, we believe it is important that you are aware of basic life support techniques in case your baby ever has problems with breathing. By receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training you will be equipped with a skill that may save the life of yours or someone else's baby.

This video should be used in conjunction with CPR training and practice for parents and carers of young babies. It addresses the principles of resuscitation of INFANTS only, that is from the time of birth to the end of the first year. The video is not intended as a substitute for attending a training session or practicing on a mannequin. It has been produced to reinforce the principles taught at a training session. For details of training courses for infant CPR and CPR for older children, see your midwife or health visitor.

As your pregnancy progresses and the birth of your baby approaches, you will probably have given some thought to how you will experience labour and in particular the pain associated with it.

If this is your first baby you won’t know how you will react to labour until you are actually experiencing it. Whilst a few women require no pain relief, the majority will require some help. It is therefore worth spending some time considering the options open to you whilst at the same time keeping an open mind.

Your choice of pain relief may also be influenced by other important decisions that you will be making. For example, although a range of options will be available to you if you are having a home birth, an epidural will not be, as this is only available in hospital. Your midwife is the best person to discuss your choices with. She can discuss the different ways of relieving pain and also tell you what options are available at your local hospital or birth unit.

Smoking is an addiction. The strength of the addiction is thought to be similar, or exceeding that seen with drugs of abuse, such as heroin or cocaine. 66% of smokers say they would like to quit but only 0.5% - 3% succeed in stopping each year because most of them try to stop using will power alone. Using nicotine replacement therapy can double the chances of quitting.

Smoking is the biggest single cause of ill health and premature death in the UK. Smoking kills 120,000 people each year in this country.

This DVD examines the dangers of smoking in pregnancy and includes interviews with young pregnant women who are seeking to quit smoking before their babies are born.
